Basic discipleship is the place that immature Christians are established in their faith by developing their awareness of what it means to follow Christ. It is here that older Christians help train new or very young Christians. Like small children, new Christians are unstable and need security. Who would labor nine months to have a child only to neglect him after he is born? But this is precisely what many churches have done.
With basic discipleship training, you will:
· Grow your understanding of God's word.
· Have access to online course materials and other features that can further your knowledge.
· Build your personal relationship with God by developing spiritual discipline.
· Realize the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit and learn to walk in it
· Experience being a vital part of a healthy, growing church community.
· Build lifelong relationships with leaders, mentors, and peers.
· Transform yourself to be more and more Christ-like.
Training will include:
Three aspects of discipleship that we will look at are
Discipleship Training's goal is to bring together people and challenge them to worship, listen to, and obey God so that they may serve through the expressions of God’s love for the world. It strives to inspire and cultivate an individual’s solid relationship with God which will result in developing a Christ-like character that is based on a solid biblical foundation, the work of the Holy Spirit, personal application of biblical truth, the Cross, and empowering grace. It encourages living and working among people that have different personalities and perspectives so that the ability to reach different cultures and religions is strengthened.
The book we are going to use for the first year is broken up into several modules. Module 1 discusses pursuing Christ by using the Gospel, repentance and faith, and the assurance of Salvation. It looks at the promise of God’s word and gives ways that you can abide by it. Finally, it discusses the importance of prayer and praying through scripture.
The second Module looks at Loving God, firstly discussing the attributes of God; as the Creator and Sustainer who is the embodiment of Holiness and Love. It examines His righteous anger and justice, His mercy and grace, His truthfulness and faithfulness, and His sovereignty. It teaches us to find delight in Him as our greatest treasure and the supreme satisfaction of our souls, learning to find and identify scriptures that related to this pure joy. It talks about obedience that we must have towards Jesus, ways to overcome temptation, and how to look at the ways the Holy Spirit is present in and influences our growth in holiness.
The third module talks about cultivating Godliness in your life by living out a mutual ministry to one another within the body of Christ. It looks at the importance of focusing on a local church and how you can help support its mission. It discusses developing constructive use of time, as well as the lessons that Jesus teaches on money and possessions. Also emphasized are the importance of humility and forgiveness and how they relate to your discipleship.
The final module looks at making disciples and looks at practices that will lead us closer to God. It looks at the Spiritual Gifts of God we are given, what they are and what we need do to with them. Finally it looks at Evangelism and its costs, the ways disciples can pass along what they have learned to teach other disciples, and how to develop a vision that will help you spread the word of the Gospel to far reaching areas.
We will have an additional book for second year students following the first semester.
